THE UNCOVERING
OF THE BALI BLAST CASE
Drs. Made Mangku Pastika
Inspector General Police, Investigator In Charge in Kuta Bali Bomb Case
On October 12th
2002 a tragic event occurred in Bali. Three separate bombs where detonated
causing hundreds of deaths and casualties, and a vast amount of material damage.
This tragedy attracted international attention, because up until this occurrence
Bali was known as a safe and secure tourist destination, and most of the victim
were foreign tourists.
After the bomb blast the Police started comprehensive investigations and helping
organise evacuations of the victims. They got help from local communities,
volunteers and other organisations. The Police also formed a team of
investigations to uncover the incidents. Several countries supported them.
The crime scene was throughly searched throught by forensic experts from various
countries using high technology. Within a short time of evidence being gathered
from the crime scene, Police were able to link this evidence to several prime
suspects, which resulted in their apprehension.
After interrogating the prime suspects and evaluating the evidence, it led
Police to the conclusion that these suspects were just a few of a well-organised
terrorist network. Some prime suspects are currently facing the co urt of law,
whilst others are still wanted.
Investigations are continued, and strong indications show that the perpetrators
of the Bali bomb blast are linked to the international terrorist organisation
Jamaah Islamiah and event to Al-Qaeda. Several of the perpetrators are known to
be the arganisational structure of Jamaah Islamiah.
The succesfull uncovering of the Bali bomb blast would not have been possible
without the high technology tools and experts from friendly countries. This
includes identifying bodies of victims that were unrecognisable.
The investigation team still fases difficulties in completing the uncovering of
the network behind the Bali bombers, in spite of which their morale is still
high in fighting terrorism.
Indonesian Police have collaborated with American, Australian, and Japanese
Police to set international security standarts to prevent and defect any further
terrorist attacks in Bali.
